Chomsky's Manufacturing Consent: We've Come Full Circle

It hit me as I was reading a New York Times article on left wing rioters "needing protection" by police from right wing persons who choose to themselves for their own protection because the police and mayors of cities are doing little: "This sounds familiar."

Some described the article as "gas lighting."  To me, it reminded me of Edward S. Herman and Noam Chomsky's "Manufacturing Consent."  Of course, they were railing against the right.  They propose that the mass media of the United States "are effective and powerful ideological institutions that carry out a system-supportive propaganda function, by reliance on market forces, internalized assumptions, and self-censorship, and without overt coercion."  This  sounds like the left media today, if not all of the media today.

If you simply replace or add (highlighted) a few words from quotes from Manufacturing Consent:

“Large corporate advertisers on television will rarely sponsor programs that engage in serious criticisms of left wing activities.

“Education is a system of imposed ignorance by the left.”

“The leftist mass media serve as a system for communicating messages and symbols to the general populace. It is their function to amuse, entertain, and inform, and to inculcate individuals with the values, beliefs, and codes of behavior that will integrate them into the institutional structures of the larger liberal society. In a world of concentrated wealth and major conflicts of class interest, to fulfill this role requires systematic propaganda.”

“The beauty of the system, however, is that such dissent and inconvenient conservative/right wing information are kept within bounds and at the margins, so that while their presence shows that the system is not monolithic, they are not large enough to interfere unduly with the domination of the official left agenda.”

“media are not independent and not committed to discovering and reporting the truth, and that they do not merely reflect the world as powerful left groups wish it to be perceived.”

Here is the original article:  NYT: As right-wing groups increasingly move to confront protesters in U.S. cities, demonstrators are assessing how to keep themselves safe

P.S.  The closest thing to journalism I have taken is Intro. to Speech.
